Major Causes of Male Infertility

There are generally 4 factors that contribute to infertility in men:

1). Sperm abnormalities

Around 10 – 20 percent of men experience fertility problems because of sperm abnormalities, which may be caused due to one or more reasons as listed below:

  • Orchitis (Inflammation of the testicles): This condition is caused due to a viral or bacterial infection and causes poor sperm motility (i.e. movement).
  • Scrotal Swelling: An injury or some medical condition result in swollen veins in the scrotum, which eventually result in low sperm count.
  • Testicular Disorder: Disorder of the testicles (also called as testes) can affect’s a man’s fertility.

Its better to consult a specialist doctor for male sexual problem clinic west Delhi and Indian regions.

2). Structural Abnormalities

Any kind of structural abnormalities that cause damage to the male reproductive system (i.e. the testes, tubes, or other reproductive structures) has often resulted in infertility. Two of the most common structural problems that can affect male fertility are:

  • Varicocele: Varicose vein found in the scrotum is called as varicocele that causes male fertility issues by elevating the temperature in the testes. Or else, it results in sperm abnormalities by interfering with supply of the blood to the testicle.
  • Retrograde Ejaculation: This problem occurs when the neck of the male bladder fails to close during an orgasm, thereby moving the semen backwards into the bladder rather than getting ejected via the penis.
  • Testicular Problems: Obstruction in the testicles is another structural problem that causes infertility in men. Testicular problems occur due to congenital defects (i.e. problems present from the time of birth), surgeries, infections, genetic diseases, etc.

  • 3). Hormonal Deficiencies

It’s rare when a male suffers from infertility due to hormone deficiency. However, any genetic condition that lowers the level of Luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) may result in decreased sperm production, which eventually causes infertility in men.

4). Unknown causes (40-50%)

Lastly, in 40 – 50 percent of men the cause behind infertility remains unknown.
