Who should choose to preserve their fertility?
- Women who want to have delayed pregnancy can preserve their fertility for future treatments.
- These techniques for preserving the fertility have helped the women who have been diagnosed with cancer or any other serious illness. With the referral from oncologist you can go to best IVF center in Delhi for these procedures before you undergo the cancer treatment sessions. Chemotherapy sessions can affect the eggs of the woman.
Now what are these options by which the fertility can be secured? These options include:
- Egg Freezing
- Embryo Freezing
- Ovarian tissue freezing.
It is the procedure by which the unfertilized egg of a woman is stored. Usually a woman would have a stimulation of hormones for almost 10-12 days in order to obtain the eggs for freezing. The process of Egg freezing includes three phases termed as Hormone stimulation, egg collection and vitrification. Without any significant retrogression (decay/deterioration) the frozen eggs can be used for many years. Whenever the woman is ready to have a baby, the stored eggs are warmed and hence are fertilized with the sperm. The fertilized egg then develops into embryo which can be transferred to the women’s uterus to develop into a baby.
Couples can choose to freeze their embryo for future fertility treatments. It involves an IVF procedure. The ovaries are stimulated prior to eggs being collected for fertilization with the sperm. After the fertilization process, the resultant embryo is frozen and stored for many years or till the time the couple is ready to have a baby.
While considering this procedure an important point to be noted is that both the partner has right to veto (dismiss) the future use of the embryo. This can have some adverse affects on the relationship.
Ovarian Tissue Freezing
It involves in taking a piece of ovarian tissue from one of the ovary and freezing it for later use. When woman is ready to get pregnant or conceive, the stored ovarian tissue is grafted back to the pelvis. After few months the grafted tissue starts producing the reproductive hormone and development of the follicles. Pregnancy can occur by ovarian stimulation and IVF or even may be naturally. It is not a routine clinical treatment as of now. More research and experimental work is needed.
